Play Therapy

Play therapy is used to help children express what is troubling them without having to use verbal language, which they might not possess. Children have trouble expressing and understanding their feelings and thoughts because they either cannot understand them or do not have the language to express them, play is a means in which they can communicate. Play is a fun, enjoyable activity that elevates children’s spirits and brightens their outlook on life. It allows freedom of self-expression, self-knowledge, self-actualization and self-efficacy. There are many problems that can be dealt with, with play therapy. Here at the Mind Wellness Center we focus on children with anxiety, depression, possible gender dysphoria and trauma.

Our main goal is to not only help the children but also give the parents the tools they can use to help their children. Children who learn to cope with anxiety and depression from an early age will be able to handle it, as they grow up. Monika will help you and your children understand that emotions can change with a little work.

Having a child that identifies as a girl when they were born as a biological boy or vice versa can create a lot of conflict and anxiety with parents. For some it may even be shocking. Monika Kreinberg will help your child understand if they are transgender or if they are just exploring. She is a gender positive counselor and wants to help each individual be who they really feel they are.

Animal Assisted Therapy

Animal assisted therapy is a type of therapy that involves an animal in the counseling treatment. Monika Kreinberg has a trained therapy dog that she uses especially for children who have been sexually abused. The advantages of using an animal is that the rapport between therapist and child get’s strengthened much quicker, as the dog emits a very calming presence. Animals have a way of giving the unconditional and non-judgmental love and company that only they can provide. They do not care about how people look, their past or why they are in therapy, they just want each individual to be themselves

Children who have been abused, have learned that adults cannot always be trusted. An animal allows a connection to be built that is based on trust. This connection then allows the therapist to help the child heal from their past trauma and create a bond with an adult that is healthy. Animal assisted therapy has been growing momentum in the past years as studies have shown the major benefits of using an animal in therapy. Animals help to improve mood, increase oxytocin and dopamine levels, decrease cortisol (stress hormone levels), lower blood pressure, reduce stress level, reduce the need for pain medication, help those that are recovering from surgery, and reduce blood pressure. Please contact us if you would like to know more about this type of therapy.

Teenagers

Teens face many challenges that many parents forget about. This is the age where they are stick between wanting to be independent yet within the boundaries of still needing guidance. Teens are more likely to make spontaneous decisions and feel invincible, without considering the negative consequences. This often times raises concerns with parents and also is one of the reasons why there is a strain in the relationship.

Parents forget that this is one of the most difficult stages in their life, where they have to learn to hear their own voice amongst that of their peers. Teens are more prone to suffer from anxiety, depression, self- esteem issues than their adult counterparts. Therapy can give them the tools that they need to overcome these obstacles, while preparing them for future problems that might arise.

Sometimes a little help can go a long way.
